2020 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - Home for Good

Projects-Home-For-Good-10

Home for Good, located two hours east of Toronto in Belleville, is a three-story, 41-unit apartment for individuals facing homelessness. The building consists of 62 insulated and non-insulated panels, covering a total floor area of 31,990 square feet.

To address the affordable housing shortage, the owners and contractors needed a durable, energy-efficient construction method with design flexibility. Tilt-up allowed for rapid construction, enabling other trades to begin work quickly.

A casting slab accelerated the schedule and accommodated additional panels, given the 3:1 wall-to-floor area ratio. Crews constructed tilt-up panels during winter, curing them with ground thaw units and a heated floor slab. The L-shaped design and casting slab location allowed a 500T mobile crane to erect all panels from one spot.

Since the interior demising walls were also tilt-up, workers quickly secured panels, removed braces, and simplified floor installation. Thickening some exterior panels by three inches economically broke up the flat planes in the design.

The exterior combined thin brick and textured paint, creating a clean yet durable appearance. Once finished, Juliette balcony railings were installed directly onto the tilt-up panels. This eliminates tedious air and vapor barrier installations.

This structure is incredibly durable, airtight, and a prime example of tilt-up’s versatility in efficient, high-quality construction.
