2021 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award - TDCH Addition

Toronto District High School - Tilt Wall Ontario 01

Construction crews began work on the TDCH (Toronto District Christian High) School on June 6 by pouring the casting slab. They started panel construction on July 23 and lifted the final panel into place on October 30. The project demonstrated the architectural versatility of tilt-up construction. Toronto District Christian High School already existed but required expansion to meet the demands of its growing student body. The plan included new classrooms, additional auditorium space, and a revamped front lobby. The school also needed a high-quality, stylish Theater/Presentation space.

Project planners selected tilt-up construction for its cost efficiency and excellent acoustic performance. The TDCH project took place in two phases, primarily to manage the site’s space constraints. The phased approach also accommodated the variation in building height, with some sections standing two storeys while others remained single-storey. Given the small floor area, which included a basement, crews cast all panels on a casting slab. They created a unique reveal pattern by placing over 7,500 linear feet of individual reveal strips into 9,000 square feet of exterior panel.

TILT-UP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The Tilt-Up Achievement Awards were established to honor projects that use site-cast tilt-up concrete to introduce new building types, advance industry technology and provide unique solutions to building programs. Winning entries illustrate the variety, beauty, and flexibility of tilt-up construction.
