2025 TCA Tilt-up Achievement Award - Hamilton Field House

October 16, 2025
The Hamilton Field House at 935 Concession Street is a compact yet innovative example of how tilt-up construction can elevate municipal infrastructure. With a footprint of just 822 square feet, the facility was designed to meet the City of Hamilton’s need for vandal-resistant, low-maintenance public restrooms capable of year-round operation.

Constructed entirely using tilt-up concrete panels, including both walls and roof, the structure showcases the method’s adaptability and strength. A total of 19 panels were used, covering 3,770 square feet, with 1,160 square feet of insulated panels providing superior thermal performance. The largest panel spans 660 square feet, and the heaviest weighs nearly 50,000 pounds, reflecting the engineering precision required for a project of this type.

The building’s tilt-up roof system is among its most notable features. Unlike typical roof assemblies, these panels were designed to be structurally self-supporting and properly sloped for drainage. Achieving this required intricate coordination between design, engineering, and site crews to ensure perfect alignment and performance once lifted into place.
Site constraints added further complexity. Panels were cast on a single dedicated slab and sequenced with precision to maintain workflow efficiency. The lifting and placement of roof panels demanded customized rigging and lift planning, executed with careful attention to safety and tolerances.

Aesthetically, the structure demonstrates that utility can coexist with design. Four distinct formliner textures and post-applied coatings create a visually engaging exterior that blends into the park setting. These finishes provide both durability and architectural appeal, ensuring that the building complements its surroundings while withstanding public use.
The Hamilton Field House proves that tilt-up construction is not limited to large-scale or industrial projects. By extending the method to a small public facility, the project highlights the versatility, efficiency, and longevity that tilt-up can bring to municipal infrastructure, delivering a practical yet architecturally refined community asset.
TILT-UP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Tilt-Up Achievement Awards were established to honour projects that use site-cast tilt-up concrete to introduce new building types, advance industry technology and provide unique solutions to building programs. Winning entries illustrate the variety, beauty, and flexibility of tilt-up construction.
