2025 TCA Tilt-up Excellence in Achievement Award - Scott Young Public School Addition

October 16, 2025
The Scott Young Public School Addition in Omemee, Ontario, responds to a vital community need, creating more accessible space for early learning, childcare, and community programs. Designed to serve both students and families, the project delivers new kindergarten classrooms, a licensed daycare center, and a multi-functional Community Hub that strengthens the school’s role as a cornerstone of the community.

Constructed using tilt-up concrete panels, the addition overcame significant challenges, including a constrained site, ongoing school operations, and winter construction conditions. In addition to our team’s involvement, the project was delivered in collaboration with Dalren Limited (General Contractor), Barry Bryan Associates (Architect), and Trillium Lakelands District School Board (Owner). Despite these obstacles, the project was completed efficiently and safely, demonstrating how tilt-up construction can adapt to complex environments without compromising quality or schedule.
Crews worked within tight staging limits to cast and erect panels on-site, using strategic sequencing to minimize disruption. Four distinct form liner patterns were incorporated to create a dynamic and visually engaging façade, representing an innovative departure from traditional brick finishes. Each liner required precise coordination during casting and installation to ensure consistent alignment and clean transitions across the building’s elevations.

A standout architectural feature, the cantilevered corner panel, showcases the design and engineering precision that defined the project. Achieving this element required specialized structural detailing, custom reinforcement, and close collaboration between design and construction teams to balance visual intent with structural integrity.

Throughout construction, maintaining safety and accessibility was paramount. The team implemented secure hoarding, designated pedestrian pathways, and coordinated work schedules around school hours to protect students and staff. The ability to complete such a detailed and logistically demanding build during the academic year stands as a testament to exceptional planning, teamwork, and craftsmanship.
Beyond its technical success, the project’s impact extends deeply into the community. It alleviates local childcare shortages, enriches early learning experiences, and provides inclusive spaces for family programs and community activities. The Scott Young Public School Addition is more than an educational expansion; it’s a lasting investment in the growth and well-being of Omemee’s residents.
TILT-UP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Tilt-Up Achievement Awards were established to honour projects that use site-cast tilt-up concrete to introduce new building types, advance industry technology and provide unique solutions to building programs. Winning entries illustrate the variety, beauty, and flexibility of tilt-up construction.
