Building a Sustainable Off-Grid Home With Tilt Wall Ontario

off-grid

Project Name: Vella Residence

Client: Joseph Vella

Location: Burk’s Falls, Ontario

Completion Year: 2020

Award: 2020 TCA Tilt-Up Achievement Award

Overview

In the quiet, forested landscape of Burk’s Falls, Ontario, a bold vision for off-grid living became a reality through innovation, perseverance, and expert craftsmanship. Joseph Vella set out to build a home that would embody sustainability, minimize ongoing living costs, and take advantage of local expertise. When traditional builders dismissed his concept as unfeasible, Tilt Wall Ontario stepped in, ready to meet the challenge.

Challenge

Joe Vella envisioned a custom-built, energy-efficient home that was off the grid and sustainable. His plan required a unique approach using local resources and advanced construction methods to reduce long-term energy demands. However, most contractors were unwilling to pursue such an unconventional build.

The challenge was twofold:

  • Construct a structurally sound and thermally efficient home using a method suited to a remote location
  • Maintain affordability without sacrificing quality or environmental performance

Solution

Tilt Wall Ontario embraced the opportunity to innovate. Leveraging their tilt-up concrete wall system, the team custom-built 17 concrete panels on-site. Both insulated exterior and non-insulated interior wall panels were formed directly on the concrete slab and tilted into position over the course of a few days. This method drastically reduced labour and material transport costs, while also ensuring exacting tolerances needed for a passive solar design.

Key benefits of this approach included:

  • On-site wall panel creation, reducing the need for costly prefabrication and transportation
  • Rapid wall installation, improving construction timelines
  • Thermal mass performance, which stabilizes interior temperatures year-round
  • Exceptional airtightness, eliminating drafts and improving indoor comfort

Results

The finished structure is a testament to what’s possible with innovative thinking and the right team. Joe’s home now stands as a durable, low-maintenance, and completely off-grid residence. The thermal mass of the concrete walls significantly reduces energy needs, so much so that the home requires neither a furnace in winter nor air conditioning in summer.

Not only is the house passive solar and completely airtight, but it is also exceptionally quiet, strong, and built to last. Despite the remote location, six hours from Tilt Wall’s headquarters in Woodstock, any minor defects were resolved promptly and under warranty.

Client Testimonial

“Tilt Wall was professional, knowledgeable, and flexible throughout the entire process. Their crew was respectful, safety-conscious, and committed to our vision. Despite our remote location, they stood by their work, returning to fix even minor issues without hesitation or extra cost. Our home is unique—strong, air-tight, quiet, and completely passive solar. This experience should be a model for construction in Ontario.”
