2024 TCA Tilt-up Achievement Award - JanVeek Model

Jan 14, 2025
Construction of the JanVeek Model 1000, an innovative tilt-up house, was completed in just six weeks, demonstrating the speed and efficiency of this building method. This 1,000-square-foot, single-story home showcases the practicality, durability, and affordability of tilt-up construction for residential applications. Traditionally used for commercial and industrial structures, tilt-up technology is now proving its value in the housing sector. The project utilized 15 fully insulated tilt-up panels for the walls and insulated metal panels for the roof, ensuring superior energy efficiency and long-term performance. The tallest panel reached 11 feet 6 inches, while the widest measured an impressive 34 feet 9 inches.
The JanVeek Model 1000 directly addresses Ontario’s ongoing housing crisis by offering a rapid, cost-effective, and scalable solution. With a total build cost under $300,000, it provides an affordable alternative to conventional construction methods. The exterior features form liners and textured painting, offering aesthetic appeal while maintaining durability. Inside, smooth concrete walls eliminate the need for drywall, reducing material costs and labor while enhancing fire resistance and longevity. By leveraging tilt-up technology, the project achieved significant time and cost savings without sacrificing quality or livability.
Overcoming budget and scheduling challenges required detailed preparation, efficient project management, and collaboration with all trades. The team successfully maintained affordability by streamlining construction processes, optimizing material usage, and minimizing delays. A key engineering challenge involved concealing panel connections for a seamless aesthetic while ensuring structural integrity.
As the first affordable tilt-up home in Ontario, the Model 1000 has generated significant public interest, with over 150 attendees at its grand opening, including government officials. Its energy-efficient design reduces environmental impact, while on-site casting minimized material waste and transportation needs. This success paves the way for future residential tilt-up construction, offering a scalable, sustainable housing solution.
TILT-UP ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Tilt-Up Achievement Awards were established to honor projects that use site-cast tilt-up concrete to introduce new building types, advance industry technology and provide unique solutions to building programs. Winning entries illustrate the variety, beauty, and flexibility of tilt-up construction.
