Tilt-Up for Educational Buildings. A Challenge or Opportunity?
When the school bell rang at Ottawa’s Broadview Public School in September 2016, it signaled the beginning of a new year in a brand-new building.
While students and teachers marveled at their school’s eye-catching exterior, wide corridors, and sun-filled common areas, they were probably unaware that the project was completed using tilt-up construction.
The challenges of a small casting site and winter weather
Tilt-Up Construction was chosen due to its speed of erection, cost savings, and durability. But Broadview Public School was a complex job with an aggressive construction timeline, says Tiltwall Ontario’s Len Overbeek.
The new school was built on the same property as the one it replaced, making for an extremely tight site for the tilt-up construction method. In addition, most of the tilt-up panels were poured during the winter months.

Heney, Project Manager, Frecon Construction Ltd. “And the tight site forced us to have multiple pours which further stressed the schedule.” Despite the challenges, the state-of-the-art 75,000 SF school was successfully completed in only 11 months.

An opportunity for flexible design with concrete
The school’s architectural design highlights the flexibility offered by tilt-up concrete construction. The building’s tilt-up panels include brick veneer and concrete finishes that incorporate recessed images of children’s artwork. The striking architectural forms, use of colour, and variety of building materials create an attractive gateway to the adjacent residential community, explains Jerzy Jurewicz, Vice President, Edward J. Cuhaci and Associates Architects Inc.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”2131″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]“The materiality of the building reflects the legacy and permanence, as well as the youthful, energetic, and progressive image appropriate for an elementary and middle school in an established urban neighbourhood,” Jurewicz says.

Not only does site cast tilt-up construction offer plenty of architectural freedom, it is a cost-effective, energy-efficient, and a safe alternative to more traditional building methods.
